WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: early

Weather conditions:

June was warm and dry, with certain cooling in the end of month, when maximal temperatures ranged from +9.5øC to +14øC and minimal temperature dropped to +2.5øC on 28.06. Many small streams and marshes dried up. The first three weks of July were warm, with maximal temperatures ranging from +11øC to +24øC and minimal temperature do not dropping below +6.0øC (7.07). Strong rains occurred on 2 and 3 July, and small showers periodically occurred the rest of the month. Light wind predominated during the period of studies.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

Breeding conditions:

Weather conditions were favourable for birds in 2001. In the study area birds are heavily affected by human activities, such as moving vehicles, tourist groups, recreation. Thus some suitable nesting habitats were not used by birds, as they had to move into areas with lesser disturbance. Terrestrial predators are represented by wandereing dogs, but the latter prefer to stay in vicinity of settlements, and only occasionally destroy bird nests on their outskirts.

Summary of fauna studies:

Bird counts were carried out from 25.06 to 20.07 in valleys and on slopes of the Khibin Mountains between Bolshoe Woodyavr Lake and souther slope of Kukisvoongorr mountain. Infromation was collected on terms and productivity of bird breeding in tundra and forest tundra.
